GENERAL INFO

The statue of the monument of Patriarch Euthymius is made of bronze with a height of 2.20 m., and the pedestal (1.70 m.) has the form of an inverted truncated pyramid placed on a two-step platform. The composition of the monument is simplified, the architectural component is modest in volume and development. The statue resembles an architectonic body in the shape of a cross. The head is turned slightly to the right. The left hand holds a cross half-turned to the right in front of the figure's chest, the right clasps the cassock below the diaphragm. The expressive sculptural solution of the facial image reveals the mental strength of the spiritual leader of the Bulgarians in the difficult years of defence against the Ottoman conquerors. The initiative for its construction belongs to the Municipality of Sofia with its mayor, Eng. Ivan Ivanov. The monument was built after a competition between Bulgarian sculptors, members of the Union of Artists' Societies in Bulgaria. According to the competition program prepared for the purpose, three prizes and two redemptions of prize-winning project models were planned. The winner of the first prize was assigned to make the figure of the patriarch in plaster, as well as to supervise its bronze casting and the construction of the pedestal. Production costs were at the expense of the municipality. The competition was held on 22.02.1936 at the Art Academy. 20 project models were presented. First prize was awarded to the sculptor Marko Markov for the project model "Defender of the Kingdom of Tarnovo". The casting of the statue took place in the foundry of the Metropolitan Technical Workshop towards the middle of 1938. The monument was opened on 1.11.1939, and according to other data, in the month of December. It cost BGN 105,000, of which BGN 65,000 for the sculpture and BGN 40,000 for the pedestal. BGN 80,000 was given for prizes, of which BGN 60,000 for the first prize, and BGN 5,000 for the organization of the competition. BGN. In total, the Metropolitan Municipality spent about BGN 190,000.
