GENERAL INFO
The Lion’s Bridge was built on the site of the stone "Sharen" (or "Banishorski") bridge over the Vladaiska River to connect the capital with the newly built station (from the beginning of the 20th century and with a tram). The district city boulevard was laid along the river. Thus, in addition to its functional purpose, the bridge also plays the role of the symbolic door of the rapidly modernizing young capital. The bridge was designed with a maximum length of 26 m and a width of 19 m. After negotiations with several French companies, including the "Eiffel Enterprises Company", the choice of contractor was settled on the Austrian company "R. f. Wagner and Bureau”. The construction of Lions’ bridge is the company's successful debut on the Bulgarian market. Lion’s and Eagle’s bridges were designed and established by us Czech engineer Vaclav Prošek. The question of the authorship of the sculpturesque layout projects made of metal – the figures, the candelabra, the railings – still remains unsettled. It is clear that they were cast in a special workshop in Vienna. The first chest with lions was sent on 7. VII. 1891, and the second ten days later. The railings of the bridge began in Vienna in September 1891 and were delivered to Sofia in March 1892. Today, from the distance of time, we can admire the foresight of the mayor Dimitar Petkov (1887-1893). Lion’s Bridge has great urban planning, spatial, artistic and historical significance and gives an idea of the rise of the young Bulgarian state and the high level of organization of the capital's services. The Bulgarian architects Alexi Nachev, Alexander Fitov and Georgi Nenov graduated from the Directorate for Public Properties of the Ministry of Public Properties, Roads and Communications. The documentation and execution control of all construction sites was checked on them. From the preserved hard documentation, an idea can be found about the care taken to find the most famous European and global companies and artists for the realization of the two bridges. At the beginning of the 90s of the 19th century, a complete urban development plan with a radial-circular system was implemented and the first major engineering facilities were completed.
